Small Plates, Snacking, Shareables, Oh My!

The rise of snacking is still on the upswing. Frequent snacking is replacing regular meals for several consumers. In order to maximize profits and sales, operators and suppliers are offering a range of snacks, from light to filling and everything in between. It’s not just Millennials anymore. A new study shows that baby-boomers are picking up on the “try a little of a lot of things” trend. In fact, they have pushed past Millennials by ordering these small plates a staggering 20% more often.

For restaurants looking for ways to drive traffic and sales, especially in off-hours, snacking options may be the answer. Many are ditching the common appetizer offerings for more distinctive and ethnically infused options by combining flavor profiles with traditional preparations.

Spring rolls cover a large variety of filled, rolled appetizers or dim sum found in East and Southeast Asian cuisine. These are simple to make and offer great profit margins on any menu. Traditional Vietnamese spring rolls call for shrimp and pork with a side of peanut sauce.

2-bite (mini) tacos, like sliders, are quickly making their way as a go-to appetizer. They’re easy to make and easy to share,
and are a fantastic way to ditch the traditional Mexican-style taco.

Sliders are a hot menu item moving into 2016. Not ordinary sliders, but sliders with creative pairings and toppings.

Sliders are a must-have on the appetizer menu. They are versatile for sharing or hearty enough to stand alone as a meal. Get creative by switching up the meat, toppings and sauces.

Getting creative with your slider options is easy; essentially you just need to micro-size any sandwich or burger on your menu. For this variation, we choose a salmon filet topped with pesto sauce.
